This is pretty much how my buddy Keith and I got our start at homebrewing in early 2010:
Me: "Hey, you wanna brew beer?"
Keith: "Ummmm, sure!"
Me: "Wanna go on Saturday to check out a homebrew shop?"
Keith: "Why not?"
*Note: Not exact quotes but that was pretty much the gist of it.
That Saturday, we went to a local homebrew shop and picked up a Brewer's Best equipment kit, an American Amber extract kit, and a 5 gal. stainless steel kettle from Target. We were hooked after brewing that Amber as our first beer.
